Features and ToDo’s

Long time since my last post but I’ve been busy working on shooting. I still need to create a system to automatically name the bodies with arrays but I’ve been sidetracked by reorganising my code in to a propper package?
Anyway that’s not what this post is about. This is all about the features that I will implement into the Resonance Engine (The engine thats gonna be based on Helljump, basically a cleaned up version).

Features:

  • Vehicles
  • Motion Blur
  • Easy, customisable player properties
  • AI
  • Fire!?!?
  • Multiple weapons with easily customisable properties
  • Cinematics
  • I/O customisation
  • Easilly skinnable
  • Drag’n’ Drop Level creator?
  • Camera filters
  • Replay

All that in FLASH…well it might take me a while… But look for it in the distant future!

Intro to Helljump [part 2]

After considering making a collision/physics system by my self, I decided against that and looked for existing 2d flash physics engines online. After some research I had a choice between Actionscript Physics Engine (APE) or Box2D a C++ physics ported to AS3. I started off using APE because of its similarities to the flash api and because of it’s user-friendlyness although I was very impressed with Box2D’s web demo.
After finding a very helpful tutorial, I ran with APE, after a month or two I saw several obstacles that stopped me continuing with APE. The lack of rigid body support(compound shapes), Irregular polygons, CCD (constant collision detection for bullets), poor joint support and speed/efficiency. I then decided to try Box2D, after a month looking for tutorials and porting my existing code to Box2D i’m finally ready to make new progress.

Left 4 Dead

For those of your who don’t know what it is, it’s basically a zombie survival game made by the same people who made counterstrike.
I’m really hyped about this game, it reminds me a lot of Star Wars:Republic Commando in a weird way. I suppose its the squad based game play, the constant “Reloading” and the way people are revived. Or maybe it’s just because I’ve been playing too much of republic commando lately…

Anyways, it looks like a really promising game and I’ve included a game play video below!

Jumping!

I’ve finally perfected jumping!
As silly as it sounds jumping was very hard to implement.
The main problem was limiting jumping on surfaces that weren’t steeper than 45 degrees.
And since Box2d’s ContactPoints took 2 shapes(I still don’t know how they are assigned) this made filtering the collisions very difficult.
I had to find out which shape in the collision events were my character, then I had to find out at what angle the “ground” was to my character through trig. After thorough testing I found out that when my shape was “shape 1″ the angles came out at 0 to 180, when my character was shape 2 angles came of at 0 to -180.
Then a small if statement fixed it.

Now that Jumping is finished I’m porting shooting to Box2D from APE, once that’s done i’ll be able to put up a demo with the “engine” mostly done.

Ps. I’m always looking for people to help!

Intro to Helljump [part 1]

My goal for HJ is to create a new flash side scrolling shooter with a story!
I began with two concepts a Gears of War style cover based shooter, or a Halo based run and gun shooter.
I ended up choosing Halo because i knew its story back to front and i really like the possibility of multiplayer.
I wanted to make this game interesting so I didn’t to just make it a game where you just play through the campaign, i wanted to give the Halo story a unique spin. After considering a few ideas (including stealth combat, playing as a grunt) I wanted the players to experience life as an ODST.
HJ is now well under development but I would still appreciate any help.
Now that you’re up to date I’ll start posting any new breakthroughs that I’ve made!
